O’dea High School Joins the Association

Renton, WA – Today O’dea High School became a full member of the association.   After years of back and forth, O’dea High School officially announced its intent to form a volleyball club.   They will participate in the upcoming 2014 fall season.  Jose Martin, the person spear heading the initiative was elected to the board as well.  This brings the board up to 4 members, with one more open position left, the board is starting to take shape.

Also instrumental were the parent organization and the other staff at the school that were in favor of starting the club.

The full press release can be found here.

Curtis High School Added as a Member School

Today, the association welcomed Curtis High School to the volleyball club family. This the third school to officially form a club to compete in the upcoming fall season. Credit goes to the students at Curtis High School, who also are a part of the USAV South Sound Volleyball Club, especially Johnathan Carson and his father Rusty Carson. Rick Todd former varsity volleyball coach and avid volleyball supporter, also helped along the initiative.

Now the association will look to the Summer Tournament open to all who want to play this July 25th at Heritage Park. Also a big portion of its time will be to develop the Western Washington Qualifier Tournament and then the subsequent playoffs.

Washington High School becomes 1st Member School

Working hard on day 1.
Working hard on day 1.

Mark May 6th on your calendar as a break through in the pursuit to give further opportunities for students to play interscholastic sports. Yesterday in Parkland, WA at Washington High School just outside Mchord Air Force base in Tacoma, WA six students practiced as a team in the hopes to represent its school and community in interscholastic sport. The practice was Led by volleyball enthusiast Konstatin Stakhovich who is of Russian-Ukrainian heritage and currently a Math teacher at Washington High School. Coach K was very pleased to introduce this sport to his former school and is excited about the opportunities this will provide for the students in and around Parkland, WA. If you would like more information about the team click on the sign up button and a WSHSBVA rep would love to help you form the next team at your high school.

After practice it was made official that Washington High School would become the first member school.   Konstatin was then appointed as the 1st official Board Member of the Association.  As the charter school he will also assume all the duties as Chairman of the Board, but obviously will be helped by the Commissioner of the WSHSBVA.     “Now it is real, there are no more what ifs left, we have students who want to play volleyball.”  said the commissioner Brian Boyer.   “Now we have two questions, Will someone join them, and will the volleyball community support them?  I’m more concerned with the first than the second.”     He would later say that it was 50-50 if there would be a fall season next year. “We have other schools who are real close, but they have hurdles to overcome, there is definitely student interest, I’m curious to see if this will push a team over the edge, get them over the hump, but we will see.”   Coach K says they are in it for the long haul and at least the tournaments provided by USAV and the Association should be enough to keep the kids engaged.

New Summer Camp/ Club Team Information

Nate Ngo, one of the assistant volleyball coaches at the University of Portland has announced in an effort to promote the sport of volleyball is extending an invitation to the boys playing volleyball on any team to join the Pilots at their summer camps. The only restriction (for this year) is they will not open up the overnight option for their advanced camp to boys. Boys are welcome to be a commuter camper for the Overnight Advanced Camp, but just not as an over-nighter. They will look to open this to boys in the future.

You can find more information as well as registration for the camps at www.portlandpilots.com/camps and clicking on “Volleyball Camps”. or http://www.portlandpilots.com/sports/2014/4/7/VB_0407142122.aspx

UP also has a team camp option on July 18-20 and that is also open to boys teams if they wish to train as a team. You can contact the assitant coach directly at ngo@up.edu.
UP also has hosted free clinics on campus in the past and that is something they want to continue to do and will open that to boys as well. The Pilots will continue to look for dates, generally on the weekends, to host these clinics. Portland will post the information mainly through their social media accounts which are: http://www.facebook.com/PilotsVolleyball

Thunder Beach
The sport of sand volleyball is growing with the NCAA looking to add it as a collegiate sport. Last year was our first year training on the sand with Thunder Beach and we are happy to say it was a huge success! Those girls that came out and trained came back to the club season ready to compete. Sand volleyball really helps your all around game and what better way to spend your summer, than in the sand!

Here are just a few things to note about Thunder Beach

1. We are a registered Puget Sound Beach Training Program so our coaches have to maintain certain certifications, plus being under the umbrella of USAV helps to keep us up-to-date with tournaments and other events.

2. Thunder Beach is run by Jen Baklenko. Jen played professionally on the beach on the following tours;WPVA, 4 person BL tour, MPVA . She is the Puget Sound High Performance Head Coach and was the volunteer Assistant for University of Washington Sand Volleyball team in their inaugural season. She is USAV Beach Impact and CAP certified. In other words, Thunder’s coaching experience is unparalleled in the region!

3. This is our SECOND year of Thunder Beach. We have grown and changed the program to best instruct and supply the beach player with the skills she/he needs to stay active, involved, in shape and still learning and loving the game. We have added one three hour session per week to let the player play while being instructed and coached.

For Summer 2014, Thunder Beach will be practicing on Monday and Thursday evenings starting on June 2nd through August 4th at Sandbox Sports in Georgetown 5955 Airport Way S, Seattle, WA 98108 . Players age U14 and under will practice from 6-7:30pm and players age U15 and older will practice from 7:30-9pm. No practice on 7/3.

On Wednesdays we will be practicing at Golden Gardens (8498 Seaview Pl NW, 98117) from 12:30-3:30pm. This practice starts on June 18th and ends on August 13th. As stated above, Wednesdays will be more competition with coaching during games. This will also allow players to play together and decide on partnering for tournaments. All ages are welcome for the entire three hour session.

We are offering two packages this season. We recognize that vacation schedules and other activities will take precedence from time to time. To best plan and schedule staff and courts, we are asking you to sign up for the entire season. You can choose between 2 times a week or 3 times a week to help defray costs. However, because we are being flexible for the summer, those players that sign up for 3x a week will have priority in signups and those that sign up for 2 x a week might be put on a waitlist. If you are placed on a waitlist, we will contact you very soon to let you know if you are in the session or not . The cost for Thunder Beach 3x a week for the entire summer is $725. The cost for 2x’s a week is $550. Tournament entries are separate from this as there are 4 different venues to play in, however, our coaching staff will help you select appropriate tournaments and level of play.

Included in this cost is over 50 hours of instruction/beach court time, Thunder tanktop or teeshirt, coaching at tournaments that allow coaching and where a Thunder Beach staff member is in attendance. This is open to both Boys and Girls. Siblings will receive a $25 discount per player. Please make sure to pay at time of checkout otherwise you will be placed on a waitlist. No refunds for sessions not attended.

If you did not play club volleyball this past season, you will need to register with USAV through our region. It is a $15 summer membership.
Let us know if you have any questions at jenb@goitvc.com.
